Top Ten Mini Album & {1/6/09 winner}

And the winner of the 50 sheets of 8.5x11 Bazzill cardstock is:

***Anouk***
January 6, 2009 8:22am

Congratulations!! Send me your contact info (name, shipping address and e-mail) - and I'll ship your cardstock out right away!!

Thank you all, once again, for all the wonderful comments. It's seems like we all are blessed to have lots to scrap about!

And now - another album - of the mini variety. . .

The kids and I made this little one for father's day 2007. After seeing a similar mini album on a message board - I lucked upon a deck of circle-shaped playing cards in the dollar spot at Target (and when I say "lucked upon" I really mean that I dove into the bin, scooped up 10 decks of cards and scanned the aisle with my 'stink eye' to make sure no was moving in on my treasures - I mean, after all - I can make 4 albums/deck - making each one only $o.25 - why, I can make a mini album for everyone I know {squeal}. . . Oh, and to answer your question, I still have 9 and 3/4 decks in my drawer). These particular cards had a picture of Homer Simpson on the back saying "doh" - fitting, wouldn't you say?? Anyway, I thought it would be nice to involve the kids in this gift - what else can make a grandparent melt where they stand??

Process: I started by asking my children their favorite things about their papa - then printed their quotes out on cardstock, cut them into strips - and then into individual words (rocket science I tell ya).

Now, enter yet another Basic Grey paper pack (Vagabond, I think?). I simply put adhesive on the Homer Simpson part of the cards (ace through 10 of hearts) - and then slapped them all down on the patterned paper. Next, just cut around the cards - and sand off the excess.
The kids got to pick out cardstock colors they thought matched the patterned paper - and then got to use the circle punch (which I found was quite a treasure for a 3 and 5 year old - who knew??). Then, they each got to glue down the circles onto the cards that would host their pictures.

Speaking of pictures - I have all my digital photos stored by category (a la Stacy Julian) - and one of those files is "Favorite Pictures". For this project I made an index print from all the photos in that file and printed them out on 8x10 photo paper. I cut out the pictures, leaving a small border, and let the kids match up which picture went with which card (alternating of course - I mean, let's be fair).

Next, the kids got to run their pictures through that little "x" shaped xyron sticker maker - along with all the words from their quotes. Then, momma got to place them all down (with their direction of course). And, lastly, the kids got to raid the ribbon stash (only the neutrals. . . I'm not crazy) and each got to pick a few that I then glued down on some of the cards.

And, saving the best part for last - we all used the crop-a-dile to punch the hole (and we have a rule around here. . . anytime this tool is being used - said user must crow like a rooster and scream "crooooop-a-doodle-dooooooo"). Well, actually, that particular rule originated that time a friend and I were cropping, way, way too late (you know, when everything you say is absolutely pee-in-your-pants hilarious??) - yeah, good times, good times. Oh - and I also think it's funny to make my kids crow for scrapping privileges. Ahem, then we assembled the cards together with a jump ring and tied on a few more ribbons.

We did the whole thing off-and-on in an afternoon - and much fun was had by all (I didn't even have to bring out the "stink eye" to get them to cooperate)!

And, back to that favorite pictures file? Well, I thought I'd include one with every post - just to make me smile. This particular gem was taken when Kate was 2. Up until this point I was using a point and shoot digital - and always wound up with very blurry pictures of my kids - or pictures taken two seconds after the picture I was going for. Anyway, a co-worker loaned me a digital SLR for the weekend (crazy, right) - and I took 400+ pictures in two days. It was then and there that I knew it must be mine - well, not actually my co-worker's camers - but you get where I'm going. So, back to the picture - this is my absolute favorite picture of Kate - and I don't even know why - it just makes me smile (maybe it's those beautiful lips, or her eyes, or the curl, or her elfin-like ear sticking out). On a side note - this picture also makes my friend smile (read: make fun of me) - because I have used this picture in about 20 or so projects.

Picture needed for a frame? Check.
Picture needed for a layout? Check.
Picture needed for a cirlce album? Check.
Picture needed for a mini-album? Check.
Picture needed for the front of the mini-album? Check.
Picture needed for a grandparent gift? Check.
Picture needed for an altered initial for daddy? Check.
My tendency to not know when to stop? Double check.

And once again, thank you to all of you who endured this post to the end. I mean, not just skimmed it - but really read it - you know, drank in its essence and let it simmer in your mind. {screeeeech} Yeah - kidding. But, if you DID make it through - then I think that deserves another blog giveaway. How about another 50 sheets of 12x12 Bazzill cardstock. Too much? Is there such a thing as too much cardstock? {shudder} No, I think a 50-pack is just perfect! Just leave a comment about how cute my daughter is (ahem) I mean about other ideas for mini-albums that can be created in an afternoon (theme, what size, kids involved? - that sort of thing). That way we can continue to inspire each other with our awesomeness!
The winner of the cardstock pack will be chosen and announced on Thursday's post.

Blessings,
Vicki

Well, not a mini album, but something else I have considered making recently is a book mark! I know it could turn out beautiful with ribbons at the top, some cute stamps, fun and creative sayings...
As for a mini album, I've considered doing one of my 6 month olds daily "routine" his first smile of the day, his bath, his play time, nap time, our daily (well when I do it) walk/stop at the park, his dinner, in his pj's and him going to sleep. I just dont want to ever miss a moment with him...
As I'm sure you feel the same way about your beautiful girl! She's just got classic beauty!

Ok, I said yesterday that I wasn't going to start another project until I finished my youngest's ABC book that is a few years late. Now you show me this wonderful round mini album and I know I have to do one for my Little Leaguer with all his pix from his first All Star game. Each page could be a variation of a baseball. He would love it.

Not only that, but I will have to do one for my little hockey player with all the pix from the Mites Jamboree. Of course the round shape could be the puck and the front cover could be the puck with their logo on it.

Seriously, thank you so much. I will have to get busy because these are the types of birthday gifts my boys still enjoy!

So many projects, so little time.

I'm thinking about making a mini album from old cds. The subject will be my 3 year old granddaughter. She just started taking dance classes. She is taking ballet and tap. I've made mini albums out of the cds before of our Mexico trips. Thanks for a chance to win!

What a wonderful blog this is turning out to be!!! So far, I've only made regular 12x12 LO's and haven't felt the need to do anything else, but seeing that mini-album of yours is making me rethink that decision ... My husband would love something like that, and so would my parents. Great how you got your kids to cooperate!!! And my girls already love to scrap, so that wouldn't be the problem. But, like I've said, I haven't really thought about a project like that in the past, so I can't give any suggestions right away ... I'll have to sleep on this one and get back to you. In the meantime, I'm loving the suggestions so far, so keep 'm coming!!!
xxx Peggy

PS. Your daughter is a real cutie!! Couldn't leave without telling you that now could I LOL?

That cute little album would be a great Valentine gift from the boys to their daddy. My 3 yr old also loves punches and glue sticks. Momma would have to help the 1 yr old. Thanks for sharing your idea! Better get to Target tomorrow for some V-day goodies...

This is such a fabulous idea - it would be great for a gift! You know how hard it is to know what to make for the men in our lives...This would be a great for Father's day! And of course your children are too cute!!! :) Thanks for this inspiring idea!

My three boys (12,11 and 10) still get a kick out of making an Altoids tin albums. You choose a color of cardstock you like and trim it to as tall as the tin. Then accordion fold the paper so that it fits inside the tin. You can add pictures, round the corners, write notes - the sky's the limit.

Then you decorate the outside of the tin. It's a fun, quick project.

My youngest keeps his ipod and library card in such a tin and carries it with him everywhere.

That pic of Kate is CUTE. What an amazing shot.

I think a cute album for kids would be the foam hearts they sell in bulk at M's during the Valentines holiday. Punch holes with your cropadile, decorate with other foam stickers, glitter and maybe puff paint (though I dont think my kids are patient enough to wait for the puff paint to dry, lol). BTW your daughter is a little cutie!

Loved the mini-album. With Valentine's day coming up as the next 'scrappy' holiday, how about a mini-album with Valentine's theme or even just card idea?

Anonymous said...

I have started to do smaller albums even though I am a 12 X 12 fan in order to actually get albums done and given to happy recipients rather than making them wait for me to have the time to finish a big album. 6 X 6 isn't exactly "mini" but with a paper kit one can be completed rapidly and I do that size for scrapping events. I've made a couple of true "minis" using "10 Things I love about..." mini albums from CK, I believe. I don't know if they still sell them, but they had them for spouses, parents, children, etc. I did a "mom" and a "husband" one. You could do one without the little album by just making your own. My elderly mom loves hers and re-reads it and shows it off and my husband was very pleased to get his last Valentine's Day. You brainstorm and make up the list of 10 things, and then try to find pics to go along, rather than how you usually start with the pics. For my mom's, I wrote that I loved that she picked such a great Daddy for me, that she always smells nice, that she came from a wonderful Christian family that gave me a great heritage of Faith, etc. The 10 things format would work for other things like "10 things that make me laugh, 10 things that make me happy, 10 things I've learned about life," etc. Mini albums are a great way to scrapbook with pretty much instant gratification for you and the lucky recipient of your album.

Wow, people are leaving some great ideas. I think that is a neat little album for Mom's to have. That way when that cute child is older and doesn't want to give Mom any hugs or kisses, we can pull out that album and remember that they really are sweet and loving kids who got bigger. It would also be nice when you just need something to make you smile. My ds can always make me smile. Your daughter is precious.

With Valentine's Day approaching, wouldn't it be fun to make a candy-red/pink/lavender cardstock tag book, with a cover date, to collect all the exchanged valentine cards from school? If there is one of those paper school yearbooks, you could cut out the children's photos to put with each card. Then add word strips to identify and remember who had the best smile, the strongest arm, etc.

Your daughter is really cute! :)

Your album is adorable. So is your daughter, love those cheeks. I am not that creative so I usually do bag books with variations. I stick in CD's for a page and also do file folders cut down to fit. I even have included an index card. I stick these inbetween the bags. I would love to figure out how to make a small album that you could stick all of those wallet photos everyone gets and gives you. I mean there is only so much room in a wallet but do not want to lose any so I am always looking for a nice place to stick them and a small book would be great if you can come up with one.

Thanks
Cindy

I think a little album about all your 4-legged children - which is something I did for my mom several years ago.

(Don't tell anyone but I have never experienced Bazzill cardstock before, so maybe I will be lucky)

I love love love mini albums. I've started making one of each season, and then I leave it on the coffee table as a decoration during that season. It's so easy to go out and take a few nature pictures and then put together a mini album. I'm working on my winter one right now, in fact!

Love your blog, and your daughter is adorable. :-)

I just saw an idea for a book mark that you slide in and out of a sleeve that has a window. On the bookmark you put pictures of your child's school work....you know the ones that are cute but you have no way of keeping. I'd like to make a couple for each of my kids!!

My other favorite is the folding mini book that was made by Creek Bank Creations. I have a "Brag Book" made from one that I made in a class. Pics of my kids. I made another for my MIL. Need to make 2 more...one for each of the Aunts :)

Yes, your daughter truly is beautiful!!! I love to make mini albums using envelopes as my pages. I have a ton of envelopes that I have bought for nothing at card shops. It seems that they end up with too many envelopes, especially large colored envelopes. I love putting them together and using different things as my album covers. It is fun to tuck pages into the envelopes. I love making mini scrapbooks because you can finish them in such fast time. Instant gratification.

Love you blog,

I have made several mini albums with my DD's GS troops, a weekend camp, and at a parent/daughter book club out of lunch paper bags. You just fold them in half. You can glue the flaps and the openings close or leave open to hide journaling, etc. To bind it you can hole punch and tie with ribbon or use the bind it all system to punch evenly spaced wholes. Again use ribbonor the binding that comes with the bind it all. The girls come up with some really cute design ideas. I really enjoy seeing the huge variety of the finished product. A 50 pack of bazzil paper would make a lot of these scrap books (hint hint). Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Your daughter is a cutie!
I think a fun album idea would be an album using cd's... It seems you always get those cd's in the mail that you just hoard up, so why not turn them into something fun! Ive made a couple and they turned out darling. Plus because its plastic its a nice hard surface to work on and keeps the album in good shape because its sturdy.

Okay....first off your daughter is a baby doll!!

2nd...great idea for your mini album and cute as can be. Love all the other suggestions given too.

3rd I have another idea to share.
I was @ Chili's(restaurant)during the summer months during a slow lunch time. I made friends with some of the wait staff & asked if I might take some of the beverage coasters. When I told them I was making mini albums with them they literally gave me oh 'bout 50 of them. Various sizes but enough to make @ least 10-12 mini albums.
They had a hundred questions and thought my idea was super cool. I plan to help our G Scout troop members make mini's for Valentine's Day.

Really enjoy your blog!

I made a mini accoridian style album of Christmas decorations and traditions we use at our home. It was fun and fast and used a belly band to hold it together. I also made a tag book for my husband on our 25th anniversary. I loved it and so did he!
Would love to win some Bazzil so I can try it out. I don't have any.

What a cute mini-album idea. The target $1 spot is one of my favorite spots to shop. While I haven't tried much in the way of mini albums my next project is going to be a mini-acrylic album for our pictures from Sea World from last summer.

Your daughter is a beauty. I am playing with the idea of making a small album featuring the dogs my Mom and Dad have had - it will be a gift for them just for being them. Your mini album is just perfect. It's really different from what i have seen until now for a man /dad gift. Even if they are pretty young, I think it must have been a really touching gift for dad to get from his kiddos, all their thoughts and love for him. I love it.
Looking at your daughter picture makes me think of a juicy strawberry....with her rosy cheeks and lips, she is just so full of life and so adorable. Lucky you.

this year i baked and took pictures of one new cookie recipe each month. I plan to spend about 1 day putting the pictures and recipes together into a little mini album, along with our family's "cookie review" for each one. :)

I don't know that I'll let the little ones help with the album, but they did help with almost every cookie that we made. :)

If it helps me win, I'll let your BEAUTIFUL little girl help me. wink wink. ;)

You know I saw those cards at Target and thought they were so cute, but would never have thought to make anything as CUTE as this! Awesome project!
Now to comment - your daughter is real cute. ;)
And - mini-albums. Truthfully, I don't do them much - still trying to keep up w/ ou family and kids' school albums. But - one on my to-do list is making an album of our holiday traditions, including all the Xmas decos we put up. I just recently bought a little album from the Target $ spot - it's got fall colors on the spine, but it would be so cute to start capture those memories! And matching paper at the $ spot, to boot. (What a bargain, can't beat it!)

Covering notepads for little gifts - easy, to do, just measure the height of your pad x 2 plus enough to fold over the edges and a 1/2" to 3/4" in over the top, cut to the width of your pad, apply adhesive to the back of pad and cover like a matchbook - the cover helps keep it clean in your purse. You can get fancy and embellish for a pretty desk pad.
